The British & Irish Lions

The first official tour by the British Isles Rugby Union Team, selected by a committee from all four Home Unions, was to South Africa in 1910.

However the idea was not unique, as a combined British & Irish team had been heading to the southern hemisphere since 1888.

The first tour was a commercial venture undertaken with no official backing; but the six subsequent visits up to 1910 enjoyed a growing amount of support from the governing bodies, although only one of these included representatives from all four nations.

The Lions name was coined during the inter-war period, when the emblem on the player's jersey and lapel badges gave them their alternative title.

The 1950s proved a golden age for Lions rugby, although it was not until the 1970s that style was matched with the substance of victory in New Zealand and South Africa.

Many observers questioned whether the Lions had a future in the professional age and the continued success of the Rugby World Cup.

But the tours of 1997, 2001 and 2005 have proved to be a massive success story for all parties involved, with 2009 promising to be the biggest ever tour with 50,000 fans expected make the journey to South Africa.
